Written Lifeguarding Practice Test

The primary function of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is to analyze the heart's rhythms and deliver shocks if necessary. This device is crucial in cases of cardiac arrest, where the heart is no longer effectively pumping blood. The AED determines whether the heart is in a shockable rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will prompt the user to deliver a shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

Monitoring heart rates, amplifying sound for emergencies, or recording medical histories are not functions of an AED. Monitoring heart rates typically involves different equipment, such as heart monitors, and the AED focuses solely on the immediate need to analyze heart rhythms and provide life-saving interventions in critical situations.
